What is the Summer Training Internship Program?
Every summer, the Lab accepts applications from current students or graduates from health sciences programs, to work in the lab as training Interns for any pre-arranged length of time between the June-August period, based on the Intern's available time and the lab's availability for supervision. During this period, the Intern agrees to work on a specific current research project, receives all required training in various related laboratory methods and then conducts specific pre-determined experiments on the chosen project.
Is there a salary?
Unfortunately, no. This is a Training Internship, not a classic internship, which means that the Lab has to spend time and consumables to give you free training on various laboratory methods, which you can then claim as practical experience.
Then why should I apply? What does the Lab gain out of this?
This is a program designed as a win-win situation for both you, the Training Intern, and the Lab.
You will receive full training by our lab's experts on various research methods and have some hands on experience in the lab, which you can then add in your CV to gain extra points in your future applications.
The Lab receives enthusiastic research volunteers that are willing to provide their time and brain power to help the Lab function during the summer period.
What will my responsibilities be?
Your responsibilities will be the two main ones that apply to all members of the lab. First, you will have the responsibility to conduct the experiments that you will have been trained for and do the work that will be agreed with your supervisor. Second, you will have the responsibility to act as a professional scientist, following all health & safety rules of the Lab, the regulations of the University of Cyprus and the rules of scientific professional conduct.
Who will be my supervisor?
Your supervisor might be any current lab member, at any level (student or post-doc). The Lab's Head, Dr Dietis, will appoint an appropriate supervisor for you during your work, based on the project that you will join and the availability of supervisors in the lab during the period of your work. If no other supervisors will be available, Dr Dietis will be the one supervising you.
How long will my I be working in the program?
The program runs from early June to end of August, excluding the period 15-26 July and the days of Dekapendaugoustos Holidays (13-16 August). In your discussions with Dr Dietis, you will choose the period and length of your work based on your personal availability and the lab's schedule. However, since you will need to receive full training on the lab's methods related to your project, there is a minimum limit of work (2 weeks). The program has two Tiers, based on the length of stay. Each Tier has a specific depth of work, based on the length of stay.
Are there any pre-requisites for my application?
We take this Program seriously. Your daily presence and commitment will be required. This means that you can't join the Program if you will be staying in Paphos during that period. If you will be staying in Larnaca or Limassol and you aim to be driving to Nicosia daily for the Program, it might be hard for you. Apart from doing the lab work daily at the UCY Medical School, you might also be required to spend some time at home analyzing your experimental data. Daily communication with your supervisor or the Lab Head is a must. You need to be accessible and available daily, during work hours.
I have more questions. Who can I conduct?
Feel free to send an email directly to Dr Dietis with your questions.

Interns in this Tier will receive a letter of acknowledgment for their participation in the program.
- Tier 2: For a total commitment of >4 weeks. In this Tier, you will receive full training on all methods in your project (~2-3 weeks), and then you will conduct most experiments in the project for the rest of the period. Interns in this Tier will receive a letter of acknowledgment for their participation in the program, they will have priority in joining the lab in future openings, they will be acknowledged in the Lab's website under "People", and based on the quality of your work you may be invited to join as co-author in a potential publication arisen from your project.
